Its called AIM (Academy Introduction Mission) week at the United States Coast
Guard Academy.
THRILLS, CHALLENGES AND REWARDS!
LEADERS
We're bringing together a team of top high school juniors to participate in an event
that's like no other. The event is AIM Week at the Coast Guard Academy in New London,
Connecticut. One of the students chosen for the team could be you. If selected to be an
AIMster, you're in for one of the most incredible experiences of your life.
FUN
For seven action-packed days, you'll live the life of a Coast Guard cadet. From Reveille
at 0600 hours to Taps at 2200 hours, you experience the thrills, challenges and rewards of
the Academy's mix of academic, military and physical training.
PRIDE
AIMsters are divided into platoons under the leadership of a third-year Academy cadet who
serves as cadre. Together you'll share experiences all week long. From military-style
training to interactive engineering classes, from athletic competition to dances and
picnics, you'll experience non-stop action with your platoon.
FRIENDS
AIMsters come from every part of the U.S. They're into the same things you are. That means
they're intelligent, educated, motivated, dedicated, adventurous team players. You'll find
that the young men and women you meet here are natural leaders. And the best bunch of
friends you can imagine.
CHALLENGING
AIM Week is intense and unique just like the Coast Guard Academy. No other service academy
offers a program like this. After AIM, you'll understand why the Coast Guard Academy is
one of the highest rated, most selective colleges in the country.
INTENSE
You'll go sailing and tour Coast Guard vessels and aircraft. Compete, work out and play in
exceptional athletic and recreational facilities. Every acre of the beautiful campus on
the Thames River is open to explore.
ARE YOU READY FOR THIS EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCE?
If you are interested in being an AIMster, you can obtain an application from the Coast
Guard Auxiliary's Career Counselor listed below. Applicants will be interviewed by local
Coast Guard Auxiliarists. Selections are based on individual merit and interest in the
Coast Guard Academy. Physical requirements are: 20/400 vision correctable to 20/20.
Additional refractive error limits are specified. Common disqualifiers include
color-blindness and asthma. Weight must be proportional to height.
AIMSTERS CAN'T WAIT TO COME BACK.
AIMsters are under no obligation to apply for admission to the Academy. But, chances are,
as an AIMster you'll feel like a new person after a week here. And you'll count the days
until you can come back. The Coast Guard Academy is the only national service academy
where admission is based solely on individual merit. There are no Congressional
Appointments. Acceptance is based on an annual competition among top students across the
nation. You'll be evaluated on your academic standing and overall achievements.
Over 95% of entering students are in the top 20% of their high school class. Successful applicants to the Academy have a combined SAT I average of 1260 and an ACT composite of 27.
As an Academy graduate, you'll have one of the most important jobs in the country as a commissioned Coast Guard Officer. You would be responsible for leading the courageous men and women of the Coast Guard as they carry out their duties saving lives and protecting property and the environment. When you come home from AIM Week, you would know what it takes to make it in the Coast Guard Academy and as a Coast Guard Officer.

The basic requirements for participation in Project AIM are:
1. a U.S. citizen not over 18 years and not under 15 years of age
2. currently a junior in high school
3. very good scholastic record, in the upper 20% of the class
4. visual acuity 20/400 correctable to 20/20 or better, refractive error not to exceed +/- 5.50 diopters, astigmatism not to exceed 3.00 diopters, anisometropia not to exceed 3.50 diopters
5. not color blind
6. no history of asthma
7. good health, with no physical handicaps or defects
8. good leadership potential
9. genuine interest in a career in the U.S. Coast Guard
